English rFactor FAQ

It is worth noting that most problems encountered by rfactor users have been resolved by simply creating a clean install of rfactor to remove any possible file corruption. Another top issue with users is not having antivirus/firewall software setup to allow rfactor the access it requires. Be sure to add rfactor to your antivirus/firewall software’s exclusion/allowed list (see your AV/FW software documentation for instructions).

Installation and Startup:

Q. “How do I create a clean install of rfactor?
A. A lot of support issues can be resolved by creating a clean install of rfactor. Please follow the instructions below carefully to ensure you have a clean install of rfactor when troubleshooting any issues.

1. Uninstall rfactor from your Windows Control Panel. If it is not listed there, navigate to your rfactor installation folder and double-click on the Uninstall.exe file.
2. DELETE the entire rfactor folder along with all its contents.
3. If you have the SafeDisc DVD version of rfactor which requires the DVD to be inserted to play, install rfactor from your DVD. If you have the digital download version, go to the download’s page of rfactor.net and download the latest FULL INSTALLER of rfactor, then install it after downloading by double-clicking on the setup file.
4. When prompted to update Directx, select YES (even if you have a newer version of Directx or Windows Vista). The installer will not downgrade your Directx. It will only install files required by rfactor that do not already exist in the Directx distribution or that require updating.
5. Launch rfactor. If you are prompted to activate rfactor, use your 32 digit activation code and follow the instructions at the Trymedia Customer Support Center for activation.

NOTE: DO NOT install any mods/addons until you have run rfactor with the default content successfully.

Q. I’ve lost some files of my rfactor install. Is there somewhere I can get just the files I need or do I have to reinstall the entire game?
A. You can get individual files for your version of rfactor from the file repository.

http://files.imagespaceinc.com/

Q. After installing rfactor and running rFconfig, when it goes to run rfactor I get an error that rfactor has encountered a problem and needs to close.
A. This can occur for many reasons. Ensure that:
Your computer meets the minimum system requirements (see the bottom of the features page of rfactor.net).
When you installed rfactor and prompted to update Directx, that you selected YES (even if you have the latest version of Directx or Windows Vista). This is important as required files may be missing or corrupt. Not performing this step during installation is the #1 reason for the abovementioned error.
Your Directx is up-to-date and not corrupt. Try reinstalling Directx thus allowing it to update/repair any possible file/registry issues.
Your video drivers are up-to-date and not corrupt. Try reinstalling your video drivers. You should first uninstall them, reboot Windows and allow the default VGA drivers to be loaded, and then reinstall your video drivers. Optionally, you can use a 3rd party driver removal tool to remove the possibility of corruption (in fact, given the circumstances, this may be the best option).
Try running rfactor using the +nosound command line option to determine if there may be a sound issue.
Conflicting software. Other software may be conflicting with rfactor (such as NTPAD etc).

Note that even though other games may run correctly on your system, this does not necessarily indicate the absence of system level issues such as driver corruption or missing files. Different games may use different resources and/or use the same resources differently. Therefore, one game may expose a system level issue whereas another game may not.

Q. When trying to run rfConfig or rfactor I get an error that rfactor has encountered a problem and needs to close or a dll is missing.
A. When installing rfactor, be sure to select YES when prompted to update Directx even if you have the latest version or Windows Vista. If this does not resolve the issue and you are getting the error with mss32.dll, try resetting your BIOS to default values.

Q. When I try to install rfactor using the downloaded file, I get a decompression error “Corrupt Installer?”
A. This often happens for 2 reasons:
The downloaded setup file became corrupt on route to you.
Faulty memory
We check the posted files often, and at any time this error is reported, so it is unlikely that the source file is corrupt. Avoid using download managers and try downloading it from an alternate link.

However, the reason this error appears is most often due to faulty memory in the user’s computer. Although your computer may appear to run fine otherwise, when decompressing such a large file it presents the opportunity to access memory that may not normally be access on a daily basis and thus exposes an underlying memory issue. You can use a program such as MemTest to test your computer memory or try swapping out memory modules with ones that are known to be in good working order to determine which (if any) module may be faulty.

Q. How can I tell what version I have and how do I update to the latest version of rfactor?
A. You can determine the version of rfactor in two ways. 1) Navigate to your rfactor folder, right-click on the rfactor.exe and select Properties, click on the Details tab and read the File Version entry, or 2) Run rfactor and look for the version in the bottom left corner of the main screen.

If you have an older version and want to update, go to the download’s page of rfactor.net and download the latest update and install it. If a FULL INSTALLER version is available, we recommend that you download the full installer and create a clean install using the full installer. See “How do I create a clean install of rfactor?”

Q. When trying to start rfactor, it just locks up or is very slow.
A. First ensure that you are working from a clean install of rfactor with no mods/addons (see “How do I create a clean install of rfactor?”).

This symptom is usually due to antivirus/firewall software. Add rfactor to your AV/FW software’s exclusion list (see your AV/FW software documentation for details) or try disabling it. With some AV/FW software, simply disabling it may not suffice and thus is it important to add it to the exclusion list or remove the offending software that is blocking rfactor’s access.

This may also be due to corrupt drivers/Directx. Try reinstalling Directx and creating a clean install of your video drivers (even if other games appear to work correctly).

This can also be due to hardware conflicts. Ensure that your computer is not experiencing any hardware conflicts.

Purchase Coupon Unlock Code Questions:

Q. How do I use the purchase coupon unlock code?
A. See the instructions posted at the following link at rfactor.net

http://www.rfactor.net/index.php?page=unlock

Q. When I try to use my unlock code I receive an error that says “Coupon Out Of Date”. What does this mean?
A. This indicates the coupon has expired. Please contact paypal@rfactor.net to request a new coupon code.

Q. When I try to reactivate my game using the unlock code, I receive an error that the coupon has already reached its maximum number of uses. What does this mean?
A. A purchase coupon unlock code can only be used once as a purchase coupon to purchase rfactor. Once you’ve used this code, you need to use the 32 digit activation code sent to you via automated email by Trymedia to reactivate your game. To obtain your activation code again and review instructions on how to use it, please visit the Trymedia Customer support center.

Q. A free copy of rfactor came with my controller but I can’t find any unlock code. Where is it?
A. Hardware typically comes with demo software, the rfactor CD included with your controller is a trial version of rfactor. For purchase options, please visit the TRY/BUY page of rfactor.net.

Activation Code Questions:

Q. How do I reactivate rfactor?
Q. I’ve lost my activation code… How do I get it back?
Q. I get an error that I have no internet connection, but my internet seems to be working fine. What gives?
Q. Why do I see a white/blank window when I start rfactor?
Q. Why didn’t I get a confirmation email with my activation code?

A. For any of the above questions, please see the topics listed at the Trymedia Customer support center.

Q. When my activations have run out, do I have to buy rfactor again?
A. No. Activation renewals are free. If you purchased rfactor via credit/bank card online through Trymedia, contact support@trymedia.com to request more renewals. If you bought a purchase coupon unlock code via paypal/moneybookers etc, contact purchase@rfactor.net to request more renewals.

Important:
The purchase coupon unlock code and your 32 digit activation code cannot be used to search your account.

When requesting renewals, please provide your purchase order number (IMA…), email address used at the time of purchase, and/or the first & last 4 digits of your credit card (if applicable).

Q. My email address has changed since I bought rfactor and I can no longer access it to use the Trymedia automated system to retrieve my purchase history and/or activation code. How do I update my account to use my new email address?
A. Contact support@trymedia.com and request a change to your account email address. You will need to provide them with either your purchase order number (IMA…), currently registered email address, and/or first & last 4 digits of your credit card number (if applicable) used to make your purchase.

Q. Why do I have to reactivate when upgrading to v1255?
A. This is due to the Trymedia DRM (Digital Rights Management) software update that was included in 1255 which is not compatible with prior versions of the DRM software and therefore requires activation. Simply use your 32 digit activation code you received from Trymedia to reactivate rfactor. Remember, activations are free.

Q. My game was working fine, then it suddenly asked me to reactivate my game. Why?
A. This can happen if the Trymedia DRM software detects a change to your system (such as hardware or other changes that may indicate the software has been installed on a different system). Follow the instructions at the Trymedia Customer Support Center to reactivate rfactor.

Q. rFactor was working fine, but now it pops up a browser window that says “Internet Explorer Cannot Display This Page” (or similar statement). Why does this happen?
A. This can happen if the Trymedia DRM software detects a system change, or a change to the system date/clock. It is usually due to the system date being changed by a significant amount either into the past or future. To fix the issue, set the clock back to the incorrect date, run rfactor, then alt-tab out to Windows and reset the date to the correct date/time, then go back into rfactor, then exit rfactor. The next time you run rfactor, it should start up normally. If it does not, please contact support@trymedia.com for further assistance.

Q. Previous versions of rfactor activated successfully but when I try to update to 1255 I can’t activate rfactor. Why?
A. Due to the changes in the Trymedia DRM software, any AV/FW (antivirus/firewall) software may see the rfactor.exe as a completely new application. Therefore you may need to add rfactor (folder or rfactor.exe) to your antivirus/firewall software’s exclusion list again. See your AV/FW software documentation for instructions on excluding specific files/folders.

This can also happen with certain older antivirus/firewall software or in situations where such software did not properly uninstall itself, then other AV/FW software was installed, or combinations of different AV/FW software with other AS (anti-spam) software, thus creating an unstable environment. In this case, first check for updates to your AV/FW/AS software. If this does not resolve the issue, your only recourse may be to uninstall the AV/FW/AS software, activate rfactor, and then reinstall the removed software.

You can also try deleting your Trymedia license folder in case it is corrupt. See “How do I delete my Trymedia folder?”

Q. Every time I run rfactor the purchase screen comes up. I enter my activation code and everything seems fine but then the next time I run rfactor the activation screen reappears again. Why do I have to activate every time I run rfactor?
A. This is often caused by corrupt license data. See “How do I delete my Trymedia folder?”

Q. How do I delete my Trymedia license folder?
A. Some activation issues can be resolved by deleting the Trymedia license folder, then reactivating. On Windows XP, the Trymedia folder can be found in “C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data” and on Vista with UAC (User Account Control) disabled “C:\ProgramData”. If UAC is enabled in Vista, the Trymedia folder will be located in a subfolder of your User folder.

Note that you will need to enable “Show hidden folders and files” in Windows folder options (see your Windows documentation for instructions on how to enable this setting).

DVD Related Questions:

Q. How do I know if I have the DVD or CD version of rfactor? And what is the difference?
A. The SafeDisc DVD version of rfactor requires the DVD to be inserted to play and does not require any online activation. The CD version is an older copy of the digital download version of rfactor. If you are required to insert the disc to play, then you have the DVD version of rfactor. If you are presented with a trial screen with the option to purchase, you have the CD version. Note also that the DVD version would be version 1255 or greater, while the CD version would likely be version 1150.

Q. I bought the DVD version of rfactor and now it is asking me for an activation code and I can’t find one on the packaging. Where is the code?
A. The SafeDisc DVD version of rfactor does not require an activation code or CD key. This scenario often occurs when you have either installed an update that is designed for the digital download version of rfactor, or you have installed a mod which included a digital download rfactor.exe and has overwritten your rfactor.exe that was installed from DVD.

To resolve this issue, copy your rfactor.exe file from your DVD to your rfactor installation folder (“C:\Program Files\rFactor” by default), thus overwriting any existing rfactor.exe file. If this does not resolve your issue, please see “How do I create a clean install of rfactor?”

Q. I bought the DVD version of rfactor but I’m not sure which update to install from the rfactor.net download’s page?
A. To update your DVD version, go to the download’s page of rfactor.net and download & install the update marked as “DVD update”. If you install the wrong update, you may be prompted to activate the software.

Q. When I try to startup rfactor from DVD I get “This program has encountered an error and must be closed” or…
Q. When I try to run rfactor, I get an error that the correct CD/DVD must be inserted. However, I DO have the disc in the drive, so why am I getting this error?

A. This can be caused by a defective DVD, your DVD drive is not SafeDisc compatible, or the DVD drive (hardware and/or software) is not correctly installed. Test the DVD in another computer and if the same error occurs, then it is likely the disc is defective. In this case, contact the seller to request a replacement DVD. If the disc works fine in another computer, this would likely indicate an issue on your computer that is preventing the disc from being located and/or read. This may be due to CD/DVD emulation software (which you may have to uninstall), an incompatible drive (check the manufacturer’s website for any firmware updates), or a possible faulty or incorrectly installed DVD drive.

Q. My DVD has become all scratched from putting it in/out of my DVD drive or my DVD door closed on my DVD and damaged it. Can you give me a free coupon code so I can download and use the digital online version or send me a new disc?
A. Sorry, but we do not provide any type of accidental damage or wear-and-tear use warranty and as such do not provide replacement discs or coupons.

Mods & Addons:

Q. How do I download and install mods/addons/tracks/vehicles for rfactor?
A. There are many mods/addons for rfactor and a number of websites which provide access to mods/addons. Rfactorcentral.com is a good place to start. Note that rfactorcentral is not owned or operated by ISI.

Installing mods/addons may differ from mod to mod and many come with an installer. Before installing a mod/addon, please check for any installation info provided at the website from which you downloaded it. Other mods/addons may be distributed in archive files (zip or rar etc). Typically you would place the archive file in your root rfactor folder and extract it from there.

If you are having trouble installing a particular mod/addon, please contact the author of the mod for support or visit a related forum for further assistance.

Q. I’ve downloaded a mod for rfactor but I can’t get it to show up when I start the game or it doesn’t work properly.
A. As previously mentioned, there are many mods/addons for rfactor and it is therefore impossible for us to know all the changes that every mod could make to the original rfactor installation, or what errors may be present in any given mod. Therefore, when seeking support for 3rd party mods, please contact the author/mod group or a related forum for assistance.

Q. I downloaded and installed a mod/addon/track/vehicle for rfactor and now rfactor does not run properly and/or I get errors about missing textures/files. How do I get it working again?
A. If a mod or addon is not installed properly or it does not follow certain guidelines, it can corrupt your rfactor installation. Please follow the instructions under “How do I create a clean install of rfactor?”. If the problem persists with a specific mod/addon, please contact the author of the mod/addon for support or visit a related forum.

Multiplayer:

Q. When I try to play rfactor over my LAN with a friend, the server doesn’t show up. Why?
A. Make sure the “Refresh List Type” setting in the Connect->Settings page is set to LAN and not Internet.

Q. Do I need to be signed on to RaceCast to play online?
A. No.

Q. Why do some servers in the list have a small icon of a LOCK beside them?
A. This means the server requires a password in order for you to join.

Q. When I join a game I have no car to drive. I have no “race” button to click. How do I get into my car and drive?
A. In the Connect->Settings screen, set Spectator to OFF. Otherwise, you will only be a spectator at the track.

Q. What do I need to set up to host a race in rfactor?
A. See the documentation in your rfactor/support folder for detailed information. Also check out portforward.com for instructions for your specific router.

Q. When I host a game, why can’t people find my server in the matchmaker list?
A. You need to enable “Announce On MatchMaker” in the Connect->Settings page in rfactor.

Q. I click on “Announce On MatchMaker” but I can’t set it to YES. Why?
A. You first have to pass the hosting test by clicking on the [Hosting Test] button in the Connect->Settings page.

Q. When running the hosting test, I receive the following error “Cannot determine the status of your connection”.
A. The hosting test cannot detect every possible network setup and thus may fail even though your setup may support hosting rfactor online races. In this case, you can manually force the settings by editing your multiplayer.ini file located in your rfactor\UserData\ folder. You can edit it in notepad or any other plain text editor (do not use a word processor).

Look for the following lines in your multiplayer.ini file and set them to the following values:

Announce Allowed=”1″
Announce Host=”1″

Save the file and run rfactor.

DO NOT attempt to run the in-game Hosting Test AFTER setting these values or you will reset them and be right back where you started.

Q. When I try to join an online server I keep getting mismatches, then booted back to the main screen. Why?
A. This error means that the file in question on your rfactor installation does not match the file of the same name on the server. This is often due to not having the same version of a mod/addon. Check for updates to the latest version of the mod (tracks, vehicles, etc) that the server is running or inquire if they are using an older version of the mod for specific reasons and install the same version.

This can also occur if your rfactor installation has become corrupt from mod/addon installations. See “How do I create a clean install of rfactor?” to solve corruption issues.

Q. When I try to join an online server, it says “Incompatible Game Version”. What does this mean?
A. This means you do not have the same version of the game that the server is running. You can check which version of the game the server is running by clicking on the News/Info tab in the matchmaker list screen after selecting a server. For more info, see “How can I tell what version I have and how do I update to the latest version of rfactor?”

Q. Clients are being disconnected from the server right after the race starts.
A. Turn off RaceCast or remove it from your plugins folder to see if this resolves the issue.

Game Play:

Q. When I drive out on the track, my car is limited to 2nd gear or slow speed. How can I make it go faster?
A. Turn off your speed limiter after leaving the pits (this would be the ‘L’ key by default).

Q. When I try to assign my G25 controls in the game, it crashes. Why?
A. This is likely due to having the spotter plugin installed. Try removing it then mapping your controls.

Q. When I try to assign controls to my G25, it won’t let me. It either ignores it or just disappears before I can select a control.
A. Make sure the shifter on your G25 is in neutral.

Graphics:

Q. I keep getting lockups and stuttering (other names for it are frame lock, micro-freezing). What causes this?
A. This can be caused by a number of different sources. Here is a list of possibilities and what you can do to try to resolve it.
Always troubleshoot issues with a clean install of rfactor with no mods/addons. See “How do I create a clean install of rfactor?” before troubleshooting these issues.
Memory timing. Try setting your BIOS to safe/default settings or if you are familiar with your BIOS settings, ensure you memory timing settings are correct for your memory.
Mixed memory modules. Ensure your memory modules are all of the same type and speed.
Speed Stepping technology. Try disabling speed stepping technology in your BIOS settings.
Software running in the background. This is particularly true if you notice the freezes are evenly timed (i.e. Every 2 seconds for example). Try booting your system using msconfig with no unnecessary startup items.
Pre-rendered frames video driver setting. Try changing the value in your video card driver settings.

Q. When I go out on the track, the sky is either black or all messed up. Why?
A. This is likely due to a wayward sky.gmt file lying around in a subfolder somewhere and usually occurs after having installed a mod/addon. Search your rfactor subfolders for this file and move it out of the rfactor directory to see if the problem is resolved. If this does not resolve the issue, see “How do I create a clean install of rfactor?”

Q. I have strange artifacts in the graphics while playing rfactor.
A. This may be due, but not limited to, the following:
Check that your power supply has sufficient power for your video card.
Turn off write combine in your advanced video card settings.
Make a clean install of drivers by first fully uninstalling them. A better option may be to use a 3rd party driver removal program to “clean out” the drivers, then reinstall your video drivers.
Ensure your video card is not overheating. You can download a program like RivaTuner to check your video card temps and fan performance.
Check that the memory on your video card is not faulty or damaged from overheating.

Q. I have strange polygons going across my view when out on the track – they look like messed up objects stretched out into triangles.
A. Try creating a clean install of rfactor. Follow this by a clean install of updated video drivers (which means uninstalling them first). If this does not resolve the issue, have your video card checked for overheating and/or damage.

General Questions:

Q. Where is the game manual?
A. The game manual is located in your rfactor\support folder. Additional information can be found on the RSC community forums at http://forum.rscnet.org/forumdisplay.php?f=799

Q. Does rFactor run on Windows Vista 32/64 bit?
A. Yes. The problem most people encounter is not having Vista compatible hardware/drivers. If your system components are not Vista compatible, rfactor may not function correctly.

Q. Will rfactor run on a Mac? What about using BootCamp?
A. This is not a supported environment. Given the different architecture of a Mac, there is no guarantee such a configuration will work as rfactor was not designed to run in this environment.

Q. Is there a Linux version of rfactor or the dedicated server?
A. No. Sorry.

Q. My antivirus software detects rfactor as a virus. Should I click ignore and run it anyway?
A. First ensure you have downloaded rfactor from a trusted source such as the ISI server via the download’s page of rfactor.net. If that download is still reported as a virus, it is likely that your antivirus software is reporting a false positive. Contact tech support of your antivirus software for further details and recommendations.

Q. Which controllers are compatible with rfactor?
A. rFactor uses Directx’s DirectInput. Your controller should be Directx compatible with compatible drivers, and setup & configurable in Windows Game Controllers.

Q. I cannot log onto rfactorcentral.com or having trouble registering.
A. rfactorcentral.com is not owned or operated by ISI. Please contact their webmaster for assistance.
